ADVS98 · Adventure System 98
Make visual novels and adventure games for the NEC PC-9801, right in your browser.
What is ADVS98?
ADVS98 (Adventure System 98) is an engine for making adventure games and visual novels for the NEC PC-9801, the Japanese computer where most of those games lived from the mid-eighties to the late nineties. You write the game on a modern computer — in the browser editor above or any text editor — and get a floppy image that boots on a real PC-98 or in an emulator. It looks and sounds like a game from back then, because it runs on the same machine those games did.
There are two parts that meet at one file. The
tools — the editor (p98ed),
the compiler (p98c) and the disk tools — run
on Linux, Mac, Windows or just in a browser tab. They
take your script, PNGs and music and pack them into
DATA.PAK. The engine —
GAME.EXE, 16-bit C and assembly — runs under
MS-DOS or FreeDOS(98) on the PC-98 and plays it.
The PC-98 never does anything modern: text is wrapped, pictures are turned into 16-colour planar art and music is compiled before any of it reaches the disk, so the old machine only does what it is good at.
What you can make
Visual novels
Message window, speaker names, choices, variables, multiple endings. Backlog, skip, auto-read and eight save slots for free.
Command adventures
YU-NO, DESIRE or Policenauts style: framed picture, verb column (Look, Take, Talk, Move), items, a bag and rooms to walk between.
Point & click
Bus mouse works without a driver: arrow over the menus, left click picks, right click is ESC.
Real PC-98 graphics
640x400, 16 colours out of 4096, sprites, full-screen CGs and transitions: fade, curtain, blinds, dissolve, iris, checkerboard and more.
FM sound
OPNA (YM2608) music written as MML in the editor, or PMD .m tunes through KAJA's driver. Sound effects on their own channel.
Two languages, one disk
Write the script once and ship Japanese (Shift-JIS, font ROM kanji) and English, Spanish, Catalan or French together.
The browser editor
- Script on the left, a live PC-98 screen on the right — line breaks, palettes and errors match the real build.
- Room and flow-graph views, image tools and a music (MML) tab.
- Build & run (Ctrl+R) writes a bootable floppy with MS-DOS 3.30 or FreeDOS(98) and PMD, and boots it in the built-in emulator.
- Projects live in your browser (IndexedDB) with zip export and import. Works offline after one visit and installs as an app.
- Nothing to install: the compiler runs as WebAssembly in a worker.
